Tution Hikes and Why the Education Mindset Needs to Change
Comment I tried to post to this post on tuition hikes, but the website kept freezing. More on this later.I think you are on to something with this post. Attending a 4 year university has become something so prevalent in the U.S. that it is now virtually impossible to get by without it. A 4 year accredited bachelor's degree is required for almost any professional career, and yet most would agree that at least 2 of those years are spent taking general courses that will not directly apply to your career. Ultimately, the rising costs of tuition are going to make a 4 year college degree cost prohibitive to many Americans, particularly those seeking a large return on investment.
Companies and learning institutions alike must adapt to this environment and begin to accept more "non-traditionally" trained practitioners. Wouldn't most agree that a computer programming firm would much rather hire a programmer with 2 years of trade school and 5 years of self-taught coding under his belt over a 22 year old college grad from State U? In order for our economy to become more agile and compete better in the global marketplace, we must change our way of thinking and our general snootiness regarding college degrees.
